Fix the InstitutionsStanford's Chemistry Department already boasts family-friendly policies for graduate students. On April 23, the policies got even friendlier. The Department announced a new benefit for graduate students: paternal accommodation for spouses or partners. This policy complements the maternity accommodation policy already in place. A December 7, 2009 Gender News article titled, " A soft approach to innovating science education wins President's award," outlines the innovative approach department Chair Dick Zare has taken to pioneer family friendly policies, including maternity leave and a lactation room. Since shaking things up at Stanford, Zare has spread his family-friendly message to other universities, including Dartmouth and the University of Wisconsin. The new parental leave policy offers graduate students in good standing the option to request a week off from the Department without any loss of financial support. The announcement states, "The Stanford Chemistry Department remains committed to promoting a family-friendly environment as part of the graduate school experience." Kudos for these cutting-edge policies. We believe this is an idea worth spreading.
