The Clayman Institute Establishes a New Feminist Journalism Fellowship

by Marcie Bianco on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 - 11:15am

In our efforts to educate the next generation of feminists, the Clayman Institute is proud to announce the establishment of its new fellowship program, the Gender News Writing Fellowship for aspiring feminist journalists beginning in the 2017-2018 academic year.

The Clayman Institute is committed to the translation and dissemination of gender research—this mission could not be truer or clearer in the contemporary American culture of "fake news" and "alternative facts." We believe in training students to learn the writing and analytic skills to effectively communicate information as well as to parse information through a gender lens.

The position, open to both undergraduate and graduate students, will offer eight months of journalistic training and editorial guidance under the advisement of Managing Editor Marcie Bianco. The Gender News Feminist Correspondents will contribute to the production of the Institute's monthly newsletter, Gender News, in addition to acquiring the resources to find opportunities to publish externally, at Stanford outlets and in the mainstream media. In a series of four workshops held throughout the academic year, they will learn valuable skills from experienced writers, editors, and journalists. They will also have the opportunity to convene and exchange ideas with other likeminded feminist researchers and scholars, who will share their own experiences in navigating the shifting sands of digital and print media in the 21st century. To counter the notion that writing is simply "content" and that it is "free," we award students a generous stipend for their time in the program and contribution to our community.

The Gender News Writing Fellowship is an exciting addition to the already influential Clayman Institute fellowships program. The Feminist Correspondents will greatly benefit the Institute's community by providing reportage about on-campus events and happenings.
