Alexandra Stern
Graduate Voice & Influence Program Fellow 2016-2017

Alexandra Stern is a PhD Candidate in American history at Stanford.  A Louisville, KY native, she earned her B.A. with Honors in History at the University of Pennsylvania in 2013. Alex’s research and teaching interests center on nineteenth century America, particularly the American Civil War and Reconstruction eras.  Her dissertation will explore the ways in which the federal government and its agents reconstructed Native American life in the West following the Civil War, continuing into the 1890s.  Linking southern and western reconstructions, Alex’s research reasserts the centrality of Native American affairs to the growth of the power and prerogative of the post-war federal state, as well as the fate and success of Reconstruction-era politicians’ designs to build a more homogenous American citizenry.
