Member, Bio-X

Anna Penn is an Assistant Professor in the Pediatric Department, specifically Neonatal and Developmental Medicine, in the School of Medicine. She received her AB degrees in Biology from the Harvard-Radcliffe Colleges (1989), and in Philosophy/Psychology from Oxford University, UK (1990). She later earned her Ph.D. in Neuroscience, and M.D. from Stanford Univeristy (1998).

The Penn lab is studying the role of placental factors in brain development. They are using novel mouse models to explore factors that contribute to normal neurodevelopment and the effects of their loss following premature birth. They are focused on the influence of steroid hormones (estrogens and progestins) on cerebellar development and, collaboratively, are extending our studies to hippocampal stem cells and forebrain neurons.
