Arlie Hochschild
Professor Emerita, University of California, Berkeley

Arlie Hochschild is the author of several prize-winning books and numerous articles on the balancing acts of modern two-job couples at home and at work. Her latest ideas focus on the "emotional terms of engagement" individuals develop as they increasingly outsource tasks associated with intimate life. These range from for-pay internet dating, long-distance elder care and take-out dinners to "rent-a-friends" and global commercial surrogacy.

Her books include The Second Shift, The Managed Heart, The Time Bind: When Work Becomes Home and Home Becomes Work and Global Woman: Nannies, Maids and Sex Workers in the New Economy.
