Debra Katzman

Senior Associate Scientist, Research Institute, Hospital for Sick Children

Dr. Debra Katzman is a Professor of Pediatrics, in the Department of Pediatrics and University of Toronto (UofT) and Senior Associate Scientist at the Research Institute at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). In addition, she is a Member of the Institute of Medicine at the UofT.

Dr. Katzman established the Eating Disorders Program at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto in 1993 and was the Director of the Eating Disorders Program from 1993-2012.  She was the Head of the Division of Adolescent Medicine SickKids from 2004-2012.   She is currently the Director of Research in the Division of Adolescent Medicine at SickKids.

Dr. Katzman is President of the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine (SAHM). She is a Past- President of the Academy for Eating Disorders (AED).  She is the Chair of AED’s Scientific Committee. She is a Fellow of the SAHM and AED. Dr. Katzman is also the Chair of Specialty Committee for Adolescent Medicine at the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Canada.

The focus of Dr. Katzman’s research program has been to study and understand the unique physiologic and developmental issues in children and adolescent with eating disorders. She has been particularly interested in the medical complications associated with pediatric eating disorders; in particular osteoporosis, brain structure and function, and amenorrhea. New research priorities include exploration and improvement in the current diagnostic classification system for early-onset eating disorders and the investigation of effective treatments for children and adolescents with eating disorders.

Dr. Katzman has published over 150 articles, abstracts, book chapters, and editorials. Dr. Katzman co-edited a book for parents on eating disorders, “Help for Eating Disorder: A Parent’s Guide to Symptoms, Causes and Treatment”.  In addition, she is the senior associate editor for the adolescent medicine textbook, “Adolescent and Young Adult Health Care: A Practical Guide 6th edition”.  Dr. Katzman is on the editorial board of the Journal of Adolescent Health and the International Journal of Eating Disorders.  Dr. Katzman received the 2012 McMaster University Alumni Award given to graduates who have led accomplished lives and set high standards of achievement for McMaster’s current students, alumni and the greater community. Dr. Katzman was also the recipient of the 2013 Academy for Eating Disorders’ Leadership Award for Clinical, Administrative or Educational Service.
