Elsa Ordway
Graduate Voice and Influence Program 2017-18, Earth System Science


Elsa Ordway is a fifth-year PhD candidate in the Department of Earth System Science and a graduate researcher in the Department of Global Ecology at the Carnegie Institution for Science. She received her BA in Environmental Studies from New York University and her Master's in Conservation Biology from Columbia University. Elsa's research at Stanford focuses on the causes and effects of commercial agricultural expansion in tropical forests. Using a multi-disciplinary approach that incorporates field work, socioeconomic surveys, and remote sensing, she investigates topics ranging from factors influencing the expansion of oil palm in Central Africa to the effects of large-scale land clearing for agriculture on the functioning of adjacent forest ecosystems
