Heather Green
Graduate Dissertation Fellow 2008-09, Art History

Heather GreenĀ is working on her dissertation, "Space Invaders? Artists in the East Village, 1977-1983", which looks at artists' work and activity in one of New York's most hotly contested neighborhoods. Blending spatial and historical perspectives, her narrative re-examines the gentrifying effect that has been ascribed to artists in the East Village by exploring the relationships of artists to the neighborhood at three distinct urban elevations. In so doing, "Space Invaders?" questions the received wisdom about the identity and impact of artists working in the neighborhood as it constructs a ground-up history of the place itself. In the curatorial sphere, Heather has most recently served as exhibition coordinator for "Revolutionary Tides: The Art of the Political Poster, 1914-1989", which was on display at Stanford's Cantor Arts Center in 2005 and at the Wolfsonian-FIU in Miami in 2006, and curated an exhibition from the Anderson Art Collection and the Anderson Graphic Arts Collection called "De-Natured" for the San Jose Museum of Art in 2007.
