Joan Roughgarden is a Professor Emerita, in the Department of Biology in the School of Humanities and Humanties. She received her B.A. and B.S. in Biology from the University of Rochester in 1968, and her M.S. and Ph.D. in Biology from Harvard University before coming to Stanford in 1992, where she founded and directed the Earth Systems Program for 7 years.
Her lab has most recently focused on the evolution of social behavior, particularly in aspects pertaining to reproduction, such as family dynamics and courtship, and it has pioneered in introducing techniques from cooperative game theory for understanding how teamwork develops, and in introducing techniques from the economic theory of the firm for understanding how a family is organized.
