Nandini Roy
Ph.D Candidate, Department of Sociology
Clayman Institute Graduate Dissertation Fellow 2011-12

Nandini Roy (Sociology) is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Sociology at Stanford University. Her dissertation research focuses on urban communities and social movements and examines the identity-based roots of collective action. More specifically, she looks at how movement identities like gender and race impact the social networks formed by non-profit organizations in San Francisco, and goes on to examine how these network structures then interact with specific neighborhood demographics to impact levels of collective action experienced by different social movements across the city. Through her dissertation work, Roy aims to demonstrate how critically important identities are to social movement formation and show how much impact movement identity can have on movement efficacy.
