Robert Proctor
Professor in Department of History, School of Humanities & Sciences

Robert Proctor is a Professor of the History of Science, in the Department of History, in the School of Humanities and Sciences. He received his B.S. in Biology from Indiana University, Bloomington (1976), and went on to earn both his M.S and Ph.D in History of Science from Harvard University (1977 and 1984, respectively).

Professor Proctor's current work centers around the history of scientific controversy, especially in 20th and 21st century science, technology, and medicine. He also works on the history of scientific rhetoric, tobacco and body history, Nazi science, expert witnessing, evolution and human origins, geology and gemstone aesthetics, and the cultural production of ignorance (agnotology).
