Sarah Church
Professor, Department of Physics

Sarah Church is a Professor of Physics at Stanford University. She received her Ph.D. from Cambridge University in 1991. She came to Stanford as an Asst. Professor in 1999 and became a full Professor in 2012. Professor Church’s group builds the instrumentation to observe small fluctuations in the faint glow from the universe called the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). By studying the CMB, it is possible to test current understanding of the laws of physics in the extreme conditions that occurred in the first few moments after the big bang. The group uses telescopes at some of the best sites in the world for millimeter-wavelength astronomy, including the South Pole, the Chilean Andes, and Mauna Kea in Hawaii.
