Savitha Moorthy
Graduate Dissertation Fellow 2004-05, Education

Savitha Moorthy is writing a dissertation that explores the gendered nature of the English learning experiences of adult immigrants to the United States. Her project takes seriously the idea that literacy is a women's issue and examines how, for poor immigrant women in the United States, English language literacy is an issue of social justice. Moorthy, a Ph.D. candidate in the school of education, highlights the unique problems that women face in connecting the English they learn inside the classroom with their lives outside it. By embedding itself in the concrete struggles of poor women, this dissertation reclaims pragmatic concerns like literacy and education back into the feminist agenda and argues for programmatic models that take gender differences into account.
