Ulf Mellstrom

Ulf Mellström is professor of gender and technology at LuleŒ University of Technology and guest professor at the department of Gender Studies, Linkšping University, Sweden. Professor Mellstršm has published in many areas but with a special focus on technology and masculinity, cross-cultural comparisons of computer science and engineering educations. He holds several academic positions of trust in Scandinavia and he has been chair of the board of the Swedish national secretariat for gender research 2006-2009, currently a member of the Swedish Government's delegation on Gender Equality in Higher Education 2009-2011, and when appointed the first male professor in Gender Studies in Scandinavia. In the last couple of years he has also developed theories and empirical work on globalisation and higher education.

During his stay at the Clayman Institute, he continued to work with research that relates to gender and technology studies, feminist theory, masculinity studies, South-East Asian Studies as well as engineering studies in Sweden and Malaysia. The particular project he devoted his fellowship period to is titled, "The intersection of gender, race, and cultural boundaries or why is computer science in Malaysia dominated by women?"

Professor Mellström was in residence November 2009.
