Vida Mia Garcia
Graduate Dissertation Fellow 2008-09, Modern Thought and Literature

Vida Mia Garcia is writing a dissertation that situates itself within the complex web of heritage tourism, race, gender, and national identity via an examination of Chicana/o cultural production about the U.S. Southwest. Her study focuses on Mexican-American tourists, and Chicanas in particular, in an effort to account for the racial, gender, and sexual diversity of this social practice, and thereby revise the terms of analysis currently dominating the field of tourism studies. Her interdisciplinary project draws upon the methodologies and literature of anthropology, social and cultural history, public history, and literary criticism in order to engage the critical question of how marginalized groups confront, consume, and/or refashion prevailing narratives of U.S. history and heritage.
