Marisa Galvez: "Dark Transparencies: The Gendered Crystal Metaphor in Medieval Texts and Beyond."
This talk examines how the metaphor of crystal in literature, art and architecture possesses a gendered agenda of "dark transparency": the crystal embodies or acts as a vehicle for a persistent mythology of masculine self-knowledge through a feminized material. Examples will range from visual descriptions in medieval texts to modernist architecture.
Marisa Galvez is an Assistant Professor of French and Italian and by courtesy, of German Studies.
