Faculty Fellows' Lunch Featuring Peggy Phelan

Cindy Sherman: Photography and Feminist Theories of the Image

The photographer Cindy Sherman is famous for taking self-portraits in which she is at once disguised and present -- indeed her work suggests that her presence is only registered through disguise. This talk will show some of her most controversial images and discuss them in relation to feminist meditations on white women and the ideology of contemporary western images.

Peggy Phelan is the Ann O’Day Maples Chair in the Arts Professor of Theater & Performance Studies and English.
