Angelica Ferrara: "The Viral Uptake & Future of Mankeeping: A Feminist Reckoning with the Male Friendship Recession"

From the Daily MailVanity FairForbesScientific American, the London Evening Standard, to local TV news segments and celebrity podcasts, the term mankeeping—a feminist theory proposed by Ferrara and Clayman Institute Research Assistant Dylan Vergara in 2024—has been taken up in at least eight languages across mainstream media worldwide. Mankeeping refers to the often-invisible labor women perform to compensate for the emotional and social deficits in men's networks, shoring up men’s isolation at significant personal cost. In this talk, Ferrara traces the theory’s unexpected migration into public discourse and lays out a future research agenda to empirically test both the validity and cultural ubiquity of mankeeping as a structural component of gender inequality’s persistence.

Angelica Ferrara is the Clayman Institute's 2022-25 Postdoctoral Research Fellow.
