Eagan Dean: "Androgynous Patriotism in the US Civil War: Reconstructing Democracy through Trans Caregiver Narratives"
How did historical authors who defied gender norms justify their nonconformity to the nation? Using the nursing narratives of Walt Whitman and Louisa May Alcott as a case study, Dean explores how these writers used the language of nationalism and patriotism to frame their androgyny as necessary and heroic. At the same time, this presentation asks who gets left behind when gender nonconforming people align themselves with the white supremacist state.
Eagan Dean is the Clayman Institute’s 2024-25 Postdoctoral Research Fellow.
