Giovanna Ceserani: "Revisiting 18th-century Italy through 955 women's lives"
The 18th-century British Grand Tour of Italy has long been understood as the traveling of elite young men. But what happens when we think about the Grand Tour through the stories of 955 British women who traveled to Italy in the eighteenth century? Professor Ceserani's study adds a new gender dimension to the study of historical travels. In this talk, Ceserani will discuss the possibilities of collective biography, as the approach that allows us to consider, in aggregate, women travelers across the eighteenth century, attending to individual trajectories as well as meaningful larger trends.
Giovanna Ceserani is Associate Professor of Classics and, by courtesy, of History.
