Hakeem Jefferson: "Homosociality and Contemporary Masculinity Politics"
This project draws on the concept of homosociality to examine contemporary masculinity politics. While the term has a rich history in queer and feminist scholarship, it has not been taken up in a sustained way within political science. Professor Hakeem Jefferson approaches it here as a way of thinking about masculinity in relational terms, asking how men relate to one another and what follows politically from those relationships.
This is early conceptual work that tests whether the concept can be made tractable for social scientific analysis. Jefferson will discuss an initial effort to operationalize homosociality and present very preliminary survey evidence. The aim is to assess whether this relational framework captures something that existing measures of gender ideology and partisanship do not, and to invite feedback on how the concept might be refined for social scientific inquiry into masculinity politics.
Hakeem Jefferson is Assistant Professor of Political Science.
