Fátima Suårez: "Between Reverence and Resentment: Latino Men's Relationships with their Fathers"

Drawing upon in-depth interviews with 60 Latino fathers in California, Suårez will explore how Latino men are forced to re-evaluate their fathers in light of changing cultural ideologies about gender and fatherhood. Their reevaluations of their fathers expose a continuum between two extremes: reverence and resentment. Some recalled loving relationships and pleasant interactions with their fathers that involved mutual respect, admiration, and trust. Others remembered hating their fathers growing up, characterizing their relationships as turbulent, involving fear and violence. Many experienced both. Nuanced expressions of idolization and hatred, fulfillment and longing, respeto (respect) and indifference, forgiveness and condemnation exist and they change over their lives.

Fátima Suårez is a Postdoctoral Fellow of the Clayman Institute.
