Faculty Research Fellowship Application

Eligibility

We welcome fellowship applications from Stanford faculty in all disciplines, including the humanities, social sciences, science and engineering, business, law, and medicine. The Clayman Institute welcomes and encourages the participation of applicants of all identities and backgrounds.

We offer up to eight Faculty Research Fellowships each academic year to members of the Academic Council and members of the Medical Center Line in the Stanford faculty, who are also Faculty Affiliates of the Clayman Institute. 

Program Requirements

Over a 9 month period (October - June), fellows will:

  • Receive a $7,500 research stipend to support gender research activities.
  • Participate in all faculty lunch seminars that occur once or twice a month on Thursdays.
  • Present their gender research progress at one of the faculty lunch seminars.
  • Have their work be featured on our website as a Gender News article.

How to Apply

Applications are submitted online and should include:

  • A curriculum vitae of no more than 2 pages.
  • A proposal of 1,000 words or less describing your gender research interests and how you will apply the funds. 

Recruitment for our AY 2026-2027 cohort has closed.  Applications for 2027-2028 will reopen in December 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Independent Scholars apply?

The Clayman Institute is unable to sponsor affiliation with Stanford University; nor is the Clayman Institute able to provide office space, library cards, or administrative support to visiting scholars.

When will I be notified?

Fellowship awards will be announced in April/May.

Is travel allowed?

We request that you regularly attend the Stanford Faculty Research Fellowship lunch seminars. Please arrange your travel so that it does not significantly impact your attendance at these interdisciplinary luncheon discussions.

Am I eligible?

Members of the Academic Council and members of the Medical Center Line in the Stanford faculty, who are also Faculty Affiliates of the Clayman Institute, are eligible. Former faculty research fellows are also encouraged to apply.  Up to three of the fellowships will be supported by the Iris F. Litt, M.D. Fund and are intended primarily for faculty in the medical and biological life sciences.

When are the fellowship faculty lunch seminars?

The lunch seminars generally occur once or twice a month on Thursdays, between 12:00pm - 1:00pm. Please reach out to the fellowship manager (anyafang [at] stanford.edu (anyafang[at]stanford[dot]edu)) to inquire about specific dates.

Who can attend the faculty lunch seminars?

Lunch seminars are open to all fellows, faculty affiliates, and staff members of The Clayman Institute. Faculty research fellows may request to invite guests to their lunch seminar talk, upon approval by our Institute directors.
