Mariana is a doctoral candidate at Stanford Law School, interested in the legal aspects of the sociology of the family. Her research explores how the legal differences between marriage and cohabitation, together with cultural and social norms, affect gender equality among couples in Colombia. In particular, Mariana’s research examines the role that the legal regime on property plays in the couples’ decision-making process regarding the use of time within and outside the household. Her dissertation also explores the historical context in which cohabiting couples were granted access to property rights and how this legal recognition strongly contributed in the alteration of the family structure in Colombia.
