Sounding the Modern Woman: Songstresses of Chinese Cinema
This talk presents material from Jean Ma's current project on singing women in Chinese films, from Shanghai to Hong Kong, and from the early sound era through the cold war period. The songstress embodies the symbiotic connections between the film and music industries emerging in the modern mass cultural landscape. These singing actresses had no male equivalent, therefore raising questions of gender, voice, and performance.
Jean Ma is an Associate Professor of Art and Art History.
