Angèle Christin: "Follow Me: Influencers, Platforms, and the Rise of the Follower Economy"
In this talk, Professor Christin will present her new book project, an ethnographic study of content creators on social media platforms. Drawing on case studies ranging from vegan YouTubers to “dad” influencers and influencer marketers, Professor Christin will show how structural forces reproduce precarity as well as gender and racial inequality in social media careers, while also nudging influencers toward interpersonal “drama” and sometimes the production of problematic online content.
Angèle Christin is Associate Professor of Communication and, by courtesy, of Sociology.
