Karla Oeler: "Soliloquy at the “End” of Cinema: Shirin Neshat and Candice Breitz"

This talk claims that the key question the device of soliloquy poses for cinema is that of the reverse shot—a question that has both technical and philosophical dimensions.  Two artists, Shirin Neshat and Candice Breitz, working at the turn of the twenty-first century, address this problem of the reverse field in video works they call “Soliloquy.”  The talk explores how these works benchmark the filmic representation of thinking with soliloquy as a standard.

Karla Oeler is Associate Professor of Art & Art History.
