Lisa Surwillo: "Madrid, María de Jesús, and her Transatlantic Womb"
This presentation draws on a new microhistory of María de Jesús who lived in false enslavement primarily in Havana in the mid nineteenth century. In the larger study from which this talk is drawn, Professor Surwillo analyzes petitions by enslaved women that resulted in extensive commentary by politicians in Madrid during the brief moment in which Spain had an openly abolitionist government.
Lisa Surwillo is Associate Professor of Iberian and Latin American Cultures.
